Jim Underwood has enjoyed three careers as a journalist, educator and small-business owner. An award-winning reporter and editor, Jim was a fixture at the Ohio Statehouse where he served as bureau chief for The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer in the early 1990s.

He left that assignment to launch Underwood & Associates in 1993, the same year he started teaching journalism courses at Ohio Wesleyan University. A 1975 graduate of Bowling Green State University, Jim was inducted into the BGSU Journalism Hall of Fame in 1987.

During his journalism career, Jim won more than 20 awards for distinguished reporting and in 1980 he won the national Heywood Broun Award, an honor he shares with such journalism luminaries as Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein of the Washington Post. Jim also has been honored by the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists, both the Ohio House and Senate, and twice he was the recipient of a community service award by the NAACP.

A Vietnam veteran, Jim served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1967 to 1971 where he was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal with the Combat "V." In 1978, former President Jimmy Carter named Jim one of the nation's Outstanding Vietnam Veterans.

In 1992, former Ohio Gov. George V. Voinovich presented Jim with a resolution in which Voinovich wrote, "Few people will ever be as knowledgeable about the workings of state government, politics and journalism as Jim Underwood."

Jim and his wife, Michelle, live in HIlliard. Michelle, a CPA and currently Finance Director for the City of HIlliard, is a partner in Underwood & Associates.
